Paulina Rosiles

BA Honors | Painting & Drawing

ARTIST BIO

My name is Paulina Rosiles, and I am an artist from El Paso, Texas. Growing up on the U.S.-Mexico border shapes my artistic exploration of the “in-betweeness” that results from my bicultural upbringing (which, to be fair, cannot be described as bicultural when the border has a unique culture all on its own). I am graduating with an Honors BA in Studio Art with a concentration in painting, a BA in Economics, and a minor in Latino Studies. I intend to spend a gap year at home working for local art organizations before enrolling for an MFA in Studio Art.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Let’s Play Dress-Up is an interactive art installation akin to playing with a paper doll. Inspired by my experiences living on the U.S.-Mexico border, my time at Notre Dame, the sense of in-betweenness that has accompanied me throughout my life, and the expectations that come with existing in these spaces, this work explores the relationship between clothes, identity, and social norms. Audiences are invited to mix and match clothes and accessories on my self-portrait, which are attachable through Velcro, each piece aligning with a certain part of my identity. It allows them to follow archetypes or create dissonance between pieces, reflecting identity’s complex, multifaceted nature.
